Freedom Meditations is a series of seven oil pastel, ink and colored pencil drawings of mandalas. Each mandala is drawn using different styles and media. Each was inspired by my own meditations on historical and contemporary struggles for freedom and different aspects of my relationship with social justice movements over the years. The drawings were on display at Creme during the MidTown Artwalk on July 26th, 2012. The drawings that were not sold during the MidTown Artwalk can now be enjoyed on the second floor of 720 Tahoe Street in Reno's Midtown District. Above, clockwise from top left: Choice, Expression, Content of Character, Love for All, Wealth Equality and Right to Move
Freedom Meditations was inspired by sand mandalas Tibetan monks produce over a period of a few days or weeks as they work in silence. I spent several days on each piece meditating over different social issues that mean the most to me. Pictured below, A Unique Spec in the Universe is a drawing I made by using the stippling technique-one that I learned in high school, but haven't used in years. It is the process of using ink dots to create patterns, shapes and shading. Though there are no straight lines, all of the dots inked in create the illusion of lines.
Freedom Meditations is on display at 720 Tahoe Street. Stop by and check it out!
